Comus - To Keep From Crying (1974 )

::

Tag: Comus

"This is very good progressive folk music. Well, there are lots of acoustic instruments involved: acoustic guitars, bassoon, saxophone and tons of xylophone among others. The tracks are quite loaded, and the main attraction is this highly pitched childish & fragile female lead vocals: one can easily fall under its charm: very addictive indeed! There are not tons of keyboards, but they are at the right place at the right time. The bass is definitely not timid. There are couples of psychedelic parts which IMO remove some worthiness to this record, but compared to their "First utterance" album, this record is quite more down to earth and less strange.." - greenback-ProgArchives

U.K. - U.K. (1978)

::

Tag: UK

"UK was a short-lived BRITISH PROGRESSIVE ROCK supergroup founded by singer/bassist John Wetton and drummer Bill Bruford (both King Crimson alumni) with keyboardist/electric violinist Eddie Jobson (late of Roxy Music and Frank Zappa's band) and guitarist Allan Holdsworth. According to a 1986 Guitar Player Magazine article, virtuoso guitarist Eric Johnson was a band member before the lineup settled with Allan Holdsworth. UK's first, self-titled album (1978) is regarded by many as a classic in the genre."

Niacin - Organik (2005)

::

Tag: Niacin

"An astonishingly good record from one of the premier fusion trios of our time, 'Organik' rocks as hard as it impresses. John Novello's gritty Hammond organ takes the lead with dizzying lines of church-rock and bluesy gospel fire. Backing him up on bass is the tapping ex-metal god Billy Sheehan and on skins is Dennis Chambers, maybe the finest drummer currently in jazz rock. Full of mind-boggling rhythms, jagged counterpoint, confounding grooves, and a deft conjoining of modern jazz, R&B, hard rock, Bach-isms and classic progressive fusion, Chambers, Novello & Sheehan deliver the goods on what is their most powerful and accomplished studio work." - Atavachron-ProgArchives

The Syn - Syndestructible (2005)

::

Tag: Syn

"Now we all know that Squire doing a solo album was near up there with the best of Yes as was Olias of Sunhillow by that cosmic messenger, Jon Anderson. But who would have thought Chris Squire would do some neat work under the alias of The Syn with Stephen Nardelli from the late 60's connection. Let's face it without Squire this album would probably not have happened and thank God it did. Sure it is borderline progressive more leaning to the rock side of the genre but who cares, the sound is crisp, refreshing, harmonising of Squire with Nardell's very likeable vocals and you get an excellent combination. Let's not forget the Stacey Bros either." - Chris Stacey-ProgArchives

Genesis - From Genesis To Revelation (1969)

::

Tag: Genesis

"Everybody can´t compare this album to Trespass or Foxtrot, because the musical style is very different. We have to consider that most songs were written between 68 and 69, and there was no progressive rock like in seventies. But we can see the talent of the band, with good melodies and beautiful string arrangements that fit perfectly the songs of that era. This proto-progressive album hasn´t the progressive sound of Trespass and the next albums, but listening to it, for me, is so pleasurable as listening to Selling England by the Pound, my favorite Genesis´ album." - akin-ProgArchives

Gordian Knot - Emergent (2003)

::

"In 1999, former Cynic bassist Sean Malone shocked the metal and progressive rock world with the debut release of his Gordian Knot project. Featuring a lineup of renowned musicians it blurred the distinction between rock and metal creating a defining statement for the genre. Three years in the making the follow up album, Emergent, pushes the envelope even further. Perhaps heavier and more complex it seamlessly blends rock, metal and fusion. Once again Malone has surrounded himself with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Gobel on guitar (Cynic), Bill Bruford on drums and percussion (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis), Steve Hackett on guitar (Genesis), Jim Matheos on guitar (Fates Warning), Sean Reinert on drums and percussion (Cynic), and Paul Masvidalon on guitar (Cynic). Instrumental Guitar (Electric (Heavy)/Progressive/Hard Rock)."

Area - 1978 Gli Dei Se Ne Vanno, Gli Arrabbiati Restano! (1978)

::

Tag: Area

"Area - "Gli Dei se ne Vanno, gli Arrabbiati Restano" is absolutely a masterpiece of all the italian and world prog-jazz fusion. This is the last record with Demetrio Stratos on vocals (one year later he will die) and the emotions that this album, the best Area album, for me, provoke in me are really a lot. The songs are all masterpieces, but the one that I love with all my prog soul is "Return From Workuta". A piece with Stratos on vocals and sinth and Tavolazzi on contrabass. Really I cry when I hear the power of Demetrio's vocals and the perfect harmony between his voice and the sound of VCS3, played by Stratos himself. Highly recommended to everyone who wants to know real progressive and experimental music. Area is the best I've found in music." - dodaro-ProgArchives

Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs (1998)

::

"Four albums in and Mercury Rev remain as surprising and daring as ever — exchanging the volcanic noise and twisted sensibilities of earlier releases for ornate arrangements and ethereal strings, Deserter's Songs unlocks the beauty always hidden just below the band's surface, its lush harmonics and soothing textures bathing in an almost unearthly light. Standouts including the exquisitely waltz-like "Tonite It Shows" and the celestial "Endlessly" are like lullabies, their music-box melodies gentle and narcotic; even the most pop-oriented moments like "Opus 40" and "Hudson Line" share a symphonic, candy-colored majesty far removed from conventional rock idioms. Complete with its fractured instrumental interludes and odd effects, Deserter's Songs sounds like no other album — for that matter, it doesn't even sound like Mercury Rev, yet there's no mistaking the record's brilliance for anyone else."-Jason Ankeny-AllMusic

Karmakanic - Wheel Of Life (2004)

::

"This is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. It blows me away that no one has given this gem of an album 5 stars- so I shall be the 1st. I've been on a Flower King kick as of late- cycling them into my listening more than any other band- but Karmakanic- may be better than every Flower King album- Göran Edman's vocals are MUCH better than Roine Stolt's- and his musical writing is just as good. This album sounds like a mix of Flower Kings, Liquid Tension, and Transatlantic- its technical brilliant, musicall in every sense, and each song sounds COMPLETELY different from the previous. My perosnal favotite is the song "Do U Tango?" This song was so freakin awesome at parts that it had me laughing out loud how good it sounded. A great mix of acoustic and electric guitars are throughout, gioving the album a wonderful mix of sounds, heavy and light. This album is a real treat!!!! 5 stars- easy." - Drew-ProgArchives
